Medical Power of Attorney

Medical Power of Attorney or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care

What is a Medical Power of Attorney or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care?

The Texas legislature authorized the content of a medical power of attorney (formerly called a durable power of attorney for health care) which is widely recognized in Texas.  This document authorizes a trusted friend or relative to make health care decisions for you in the event you cannot make your own health care decisions.  It is an important part of every set of estate planning documents.  And if a directive to physicians and family or surrogates has not been signed, the medical power of attorney authorizes your designated agent to make decisions regarding withholding or consenting to life sustaining treatments.

I regularly assist clients in the preparation of medical powers of attorney (formerly called a durable powers of attorney for health care), and other estate planning documents.
